Writing Coach

Are you one of many young adults who thought they could write well and suddenly faced a harsh reality: Professors or employers rarely like what you write.

Fact
Many grade school teachers never focus on grammar, spelling, word usage, sentence structure, or the importance of an outline. Yet, good college professors demand superior writing skills. Employers have no patience with employees who cannot write well executed, cogent reports or proposals.

Take Control
Good writing is a skill that everyone can master. With more than 20 years experience writing and editing copy for corporations and non-profit organizations, Information Specialists offers a pragmatic approach that provides you with the tools and techniques you need to excel in college and in the business world.

Code of Ethics
Information Specialists will not write your essay or report for you. We will, however, challenge you to defend your thesis, support your statements, dig deeper, and include details that will make your writing powerful. We also will teach you to create a concise outline and improve your grammar and language skills.

Testimonials
"During my freshman year, the main problem was my inability to express myself in a relevant and constructive manner. Then I met Terry. In a short period of time, I understood the mechanics of how to write. For the remainder of my college years, I met with Terry at least twice a month and I can honestly say it made all the difference in the world for my grades, my writing and me personally." [Nick, a graduate of Columbia University]

“I successfully defended my master’s thesis thanks to Terry Jennings. She turned out to be an incredible writing coach. I appreciated how she took time to understand my topic and pose thought-provoking questions. She edited my grammar and syntax thoroughly, but I was surprised at how much attention she dedicated to the flow, allowing for the sections to come together into a cohesive whole. As I rounded out my last chapters, I saw noticeable improvement in my writing.

“When it came time to defend, all three professors on my panel commented on how well written the document was. I passed without needing to make any revisions!” [Kristin, a former graduate student at NYU]

Editing for Academia

From time to time, we are called upon to edit monographs or theses. We understand the importance of maintaining the highest editorial standards and strictly adhere to whichever stylebook—i.e., "The Chicago Manual of Style"—is chosen by the author.

The Process
First, we read through the entire manuscript, correcting grammar and spelling errors. We also make special note of problems with the flow of the manuscript and statements that we believe might need further clarification.

On our second read through, we check carefully for consistency of style and begin to compile questions and comments for the author.

By the time we have reached the third draft, we are reviewing the manuscript to make sure that all the edits have been correctly applied and are carefully checking both footnotes and endnotes.

It is a painstaking process, but one which we are happy to do, because we appreciate how much hard work an academic has dedicated to his/her research and writing.

Acknowledgements
We are especially gratified when our editorial services are acknowledged by the author. Most recently we received thanks from authors for our work on the following:

"Sounding Jewish Tradition: The Music of Central Synagogue" by Judah M. Cohen, the Lou and Sybil Mervis Professor of Jewish Culture and Associate Professor of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University

"The Americanization of the Jewish Prayer Book and the Liturgical Development of Congregation Ahawath Chesed New York City" by Gary Phillip Zola, the Executive Director of The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives and Associate Professor of the American Jewish Experience at Heberw Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati.
